Like stated before, Raymond's looks are different depending on the year. When I first created him, he looked like this:
Created sometime in 2018 was the first design of Raymond. Due to the lack of documentation regarding him, there isn't much known about it and it was extremely short lived; roughly 2 drawings were done before it was scrapped. From what I remember, he was a 19 year old sex worker who was trying to pay for college. He was human, 5'7 (170.2 cm), and possibly had supernatural abilities of his own since the end of his braid resembles a hand.
Like stated before, there wasn't a reference and everything now has to be guessed though there are a few things I remember from him being drafted up with a friend like his shirt being purple and black and his hair being brown. I'm also not entirely sure where the inspiration for his outfit came from. The only thing I'm sure of is that his sleeves were inspired by Reimu's outfit, more specifically her 7th and 8th artwork.
These are the best references I can use to describe the initial design. These are from the seventh and eighth installments
This design will be split into 2 parts since it was never differentiated as being different. This iteration was found wearing the second outfit of Proto 1 Raymond.
Proto 2 Raymond is completely different compared to the first one. Instead of being a sex worker paying for college, he was kidnapped at a young age and experimented on before breaking out of the facility. In universe, there isn't much documentation on him but he insists on being called Raymond. He had selective mutism and never talked about his past. The majority of the drawings show him with blood on his face since he was known to cannibalize people and often helped Proto 1 Alex sell bones.
Proto 2.5 looks mostly the same except he has a large birthmark on his forehead. It rarely appears but it's worth mentioning. It was never differentiated whether or not Proto 2 had the birthmark as well. During this time, Raymond regained his humanity after escaping the facility. He became interested in fashion and began making his own jewelry, hence the doll foot as an earring. Sometimes this version of Raymond was shown without the protective charm though it never was an official part of his design. The bow that's on the left side of his head is a reference to Rumia from Touhou and was used to essentially nerf Raymond since he was too powerful for his own good.
Miss Rumia herself, though the charm in this design is larger.
This is also when the concept of Doyleys was originally being thought up. Though it isn't up here, this iteration had a transformation that was only used by Doyleys. He had 6 detached arms and wielded a scythe since the inspiration was angels. It lasted a while too since most of my characters at the time had a weapon that was associated with them. Current day, the associated weapon is a chainsaw just for fun.
Prototype 3 completely disregards the majority of the lore from the previous 2 iterations. Here, he's half Doyley half Human but has the majority of traits for Doyleys for this time period. During this time, Doyleys were able to learn languages fairly quickly compared to other races which is why Raymond was able to speak English and Greek but also spoke a bit of German and French. He was around 5'9 (180 cm), has 3 eyes with him being blind in his third one, and is 17 years old. Like the non charm variant, he kept his freckles.
At some point in his youth, he was experimented on. Instead of spending the majority of his life in the facility, he was only there for around 3 years before being released. Because of this experimentation, his eyes look weird. If my memory serves me right, the stitches on his left eye are from part of that eye coming from a human and the green part of his right eye comes from a Vampire. His third eye didn't form correctly which is why he keeps it shut.
This is the first design to have his iconic sleeve design. though this version is very different from what it would end up looking like. Here, it starts from his forearm and ends at his wrist. The flowers are connected with vines with the flowers being colored in. He also has 5 piercings: 2 on his left ear, 2 on his right ear, and a nose stud. The doll earring was replaced with a spherical earring, not entirely sure if there is any significance to this change.
At some point between the last version and this version, he ended up with vitiligo. During this time, a lot of artists online were adding vitiligo to their characters and I decided to add it as well. Like the last 2 versions, he still has his freckles and eyes that have been experimented on. Unlike the last version, he ended up with a large scar on his neck. When he was 5 years old, he was stabbed on the beach when he was momentarily left unattended and was described as an opportunity killing. Obviously, it did not work. This is also the first version of Raymond to be described as being a reincarnation of Timpani, though she's called Dohnghala here.
Even though his third eye is closed, it's confirmed that his eye is green. Unlike the last version, his eye is naturally green instead of being from a Vampire. The stitches that were originally on his right eye was removed and his left eye has pupil manipulation instead. Halfway through this iteration, I made his half Black. There isn't much differentiating this new design from the old but his nose got wider and his hair became a different texture.
I'm going to be honest, this is my least favorite version of Raymond. During this time, I developed a style where I drew and shaded in large circular motions, which is why his hair looks like that. I dropped the vitiligo since I believed it was making his design too cluttered and wanted it to be different from the last version. He's a Doyley too but doesn’t have the second set of arms like many other Doyleys. He’s 6'0 (184 cm) and for some reason, the stab wound switched sides.
For his features, I fully committed and made his nose wider and his lips bigger. I also changed his eye shape so he would come off as being intimidating but it makes him look cuter. His nose stud was changed to a nose ring after a friend suggested this change.
This is the first version of him that deals with body dysmorphia, more specifically towards his third eye and his scar on his neck. In this version, he deals with the opening of his third eye. Previously, this eye was kept shut since it was too painful to open and took on a milky appearance due to him being blind in that eye.
It feels a bit weird calling this its own iteration since it's so close to his current iteration. This version is the first to have a full name: Raymond Magladonia, though it was used in the last version, it's more meaningful here since it’s used all the time. His height fluctuates between 6'1-6'2 (185cm - 187cm) depending on when the story takes place.
Instead of his hair being more bubble like, it was changed to be more flowy. Here, his texture is a mix of 4b-4c instead of the 3c the last version had. The stab wound was dropped and was replaced with acid burns which ties back to his older design of being experimented on. It also is a call back to him previously having vitiligo. The burns cover the majority of his body with none appearing on his face as an indicator of his slow healing ability. He still has the sleeve but it covers his right arm, including his elbow since his nerves are messed up. Depending on where, he feels little to no pain which may seem obvious since his whole arm is tatted up. He had his second set of arms amputated since researchers believed it would make him stronger and better regulate his abilities. It did not. Though it's hard to see, his left eye is showing a bit of pink.
In this iteration, he has 7 piercings: 3 on his left ear, 3 on his right ear, and the nose ring. He also has a heart tattoo on his right index finger and an energy is eternal tattoo under his left breast. Though it isn't depicted here, he has a malformed 4th eye that is on the back of his neck.
The eyes are somewhat similar to the other versions except they aren't tied to being experimented on, though that's still here. It's never explained what happened to his eyes but its not the same weirdly enough.
The most recent version of Raymond. Currently, he's in a transition phase; he isn't having any major changes but I have been revisiting older concepts such as possibly bringing back the experimentation aspect but relating it more to my cultural trauma. This will be expanded upon in a different time.
In this version, his full name is Raymond De'Shawn Magladonia, making him one of the few characters to have a middle name. He is 19 years old and 6'4 (195cm), making him above average height for a Doyley. Though he still has his acid burns, I made them lighter so it comes off as them being healed as well as adding some to his face. I also made his right eye droop more and hid his tear duct since that's what the eye typically looks like when acid touches that part of the face. Instead of the burns being full bodied, I change it to be from the waist up since that's where he's affected the most.
I also retconned the different colored eyes and expanded on the acid burns more; he and his dad were involved in a random acid attack. After being in the hospital for a while, his burns that were on his face began to heal on its own. I used the concept of 2 year olds not being as fixated on their appearance as adults are so some of his features don't look the same. This also explains why his burns grew with him instead of being modeled after his younger appearance. Adding to this, he previously had a second set of arms that were amputated due to the heavy damage from the burns. I tend to describe him as having 2 arms and 4 shoulders because of this. He still has 4 eyes with the 4th one being on his neck. Like the information here, this eye isn’t functional due to it being damaged.
As weird as this may sound, I adjusted his weight so that it's proportional to his height. I gave him a resting muscular body opposed to the lean figure he had throughout the years. This mostly came from him being able to carry his friends and I wanted that to be emphasized. I also saw a coworker of mine who is around the same height as Raymond with the same figure so changing it made much more sense to me.
Thanks for visiting the Raymond Shrine :)
